A 10 pound bag, around 5 quarts, of Colorado lava rock, a naturally occurring volcanic cinder. The stone is riddled with pores, which keeps it light and lets it take up as much as 40 percent of its weight in water. Worked into a bonsai soil, it increases drainage and aeration. At a quarter inch the granules are angular with irregular faces, and that sharpness is what makes small lava the most useful gritty component in a mix, standing in for ordinary sand.
