About this Black Olive Bonsai, 14 Years Old (Bucida spinosa)

Bucida spinosa, 14 years old and 12 to 13 inches tall. Despite the common name this is not the edible olive of the kitchen; it bears instead a small black seed capsule. Native to the Caribbean and parts of Florida, it is an evergreen with a smooth trunk and a canopy that is exceptionally dense and full. The leathery leaves are a lush dark bluish green, sometimes more than 2 inches long, and cluster at the branch tips, where they mix with the 1" spines the branches carry. In cultivation here it is an indoor specimen.
