4 years old and now 12 to 13 inches tall, this red Anthurium andraeanum 'Small Talk' carries the waxy, heart-shaped flowers that made the genus the best known of tropical blooms and among the longest lasting. The botanical name joins the Greek anthos, flower, with oura, tail, a reference to the narrow spadix standing at the centre of each bright red bract. Plants of this type have been hybridized deliberately for life as houseplants. Grown indoors, it makes an unusually bold-coloured companion to a shelf of green foliage subjects.
