Why Are My Bonsai Leaves Turning Yellow?

Yellow leaves are a symptom, not a diagnosis. Here is how to tell overwatering from underwatering, nutrient deficiency, light problems and normal seasonal shedding.

Yellowing leaves are the single most common thing new bonsai owners panic about, and the single least specific symptom a tree can produce. Almost everything that goes wrong shows up as yellow leaves eventually. The useful question is never "why are my leaves yellow" but "which leaves, in what pattern, and what changed recently".

Start with the pattern

Before you change anything, look carefully at which leaves are affected.

That single observation eliminates most of the possible causes before you have touched the tree.

Overwatering versus underwatering

Confusingly, these look similar. Both produce yellowing, drooping and leaf drop. The difference is in the soil and the texture of the leaves.

Overwatering is the more common killer of indoor bonsai. Signs:

The underlying issue is that saturated soil holds no air, roots suffocate and begin to rot, and a tree with damaged roots cannot take up water — so it shows drought symptoms while sitting in wet soil. This is why "the leaves look thirsty so I watered it more" is such a destructive instinct.

Underwatering signs:

Nutrient problems

If watering is genuinely correct and the tree still yellows, feeding is the next suspect.

Nitrogen deficiency shows on the oldest leaves first, working inward and upward, with a fairly even pale-yellow-green. It is common in trees that have not been fed all season, or that are in an inert free-draining substrate — akadama, pumice and lava hold almost no nutrients on their own, so a bonsai in proper bonsai soil is entirely dependent on you for feeding.

Iron chlorosis shows as yellow leaf tissue with the veins staying distinctly green, usually on new growth first. It is very common on azaleas and other acid-loving species when grown in hard tap water or alkaline soil. The tree usually is not short of iron — it cannot absorb the iron present because the pH is wrong. Chelated iron helps, but correcting water or substrate pH is the real fix.

Light

Too little light produces gradual yellowing plus leggy, stretched growth with long gaps between leaves. This is overwhelmingly an indoor problem. A tree on a windowsill two metres from the glass is getting a small fraction of the light it would get outdoors, even if the room feels bright.

Too much light — specifically a sudden move from shade to full sun — produces bleached, washed-out patches, often on the leaves most directly exposed. This is sunscald, not a nutrient issue, and it is caused by the abruptness of the change more than the intensity.

When yellow leaves are completely normal

Not every yellow leaf is a problem:

The distinguishing feature in all these cases is that the tree is otherwise vigorous, with healthy new growth appearing.

The most damaging response to yellow leaves is to change watering, feeding, position and pot all at once. If the tree then recovers, you have learned nothing, and if it declines further you cannot tell which change did it.
